Four Tips for Successful Essay Proofreading

Four Tips for Successful Essay ProofreadingA successful paper is a well edited paper. Unfortunately however, many of us grossly miscalculate the amount of editing that an essay may need in order to be up to scratch. Below are four tips for successful essay proofreading:

Four Tips for Successful Essay Proofreading - Request a Quote

1) Read and Follow the Rules

Don’t simply skim over the instructions that were provided to you; take the time to read and go over any and every detail before you get started. If you have questions, seek clarification before you put in hours and hours of researching and writing your essay.

2) Outlines Are Worth Your Time

Many students and professionals may think that they know the path that they’re going to take when writing their essay, but they can easily venture off on a different topic or path if they don’t properly lay out how their paper is going to be. But outlines won’t only keep you on track, they will also:

  • Help you make sure that you properly cover every point that needs to be covered.
  • Allow you to re-evaluate where you’re taking your essay and give you the chance to add or remove any unnecessary information.
  • Allow you to schedule and set goals for yourself when writing (i.e. assign a block of time to each separate point you’re making).

3) Leave Enough Time for Editing

A lot of students and professionals will allocate enough time to get the writing of the essay done, but are then incredibly strapped for time when it comes to editing. The result: a hurried editing job that doesn’t properly spell check, grammar check, or fact check your paper. Missing any one of the above three checks will have a harmful impact not only on your paper or grade, but also on your credibility.

Proofreading isn’t something that should be rushed. In fact, the best proofreading will happen a day, a week, or even a month after you’ve completed your paper. Make sure when you’re ready to start your essay proofreading, do it slowly. Read your paper out loud to hear if it flows. If you’re happy with it, print it out and manually go over it with a fine-toothed comb, checking it over again for any errors in spelling, punctuation, and fact errors, as well as style and voice consistency.

4) Hire an Essay Proofreading Service

After all of that fact checking and spell checking and re-writing, here’s the sad truth: you are likely not your best editor. In fact, after the paper’s written, you may in fact be one of the worst people to be doing the editing work! It’s only natural for the writer to have somewhat of an emotional attachment to the words on the page and the points being made. This means that you have a bias, a bias that can quite easily compromise the quality of your paper. Also, being so immersed in the paper can often blind you to mistakes that would otherwise be obvious to a fresh pair of eyes looking it over. Whenever possible, take the time to hire a professional essay proofreading service to take care of the task for you. The expense is well worth maintaining your work’s integrity, credibility, and respectability.
